Defying the standstill
Body Cares emerged during lockdown, when our bodies found themselves confined to their homes. Initially a workshop for residents, it became a space for collective creation, exchange and experimentation, where shared movement and mutual listening gradually built a common bodily vocabulary. Aware that we were living through a unique moment, I asked filmmaker Youssef Chebbi to document all our sessions.
The choreographic material developed throughout the workshops informed the presentation held at the end of lockdown: a danced journey between the Île de la Cité and the Cité internationale des arts, bound together by music composed for the occasion by Koki Nakano.
Body Cares took shape as an act of resistance to a world brought to a standstill, and to the politics of fear embodied in President Macron’s speech.
A first video, conceived as an introduction to a planned documentary series covering the entire workshop process, conveys this tension and offers another response to the same collective anxiety: reconnecting with life through movement.

" The situation with the Cité today made me think about the societal aspect of what we're trying to do and the confinements imposed by institutions. I mean: how paradoxical that we didn't get stopped at all when Delphine was dancing in the street the past few days but in the courtyard of the Cité someone feels the urge to impose the rules.... So both the internalised as well as the externalised power structures of public space and of the role of the body in them are something we have to reflect and confront. There's a policeman (or police woman) in our heads and they have to go. I really think that Vito Acconci's work or the piece in which Sophie Calle decided to stalk a stranger for weeks are pieces which we should put into our inspiration pool, because they go beyond simply being in harmony with the body: they juxtapose the body to an (often) indifferent or hostile societal structure, they confront the viewer with the arbitrariness of norms.

"Hello guys. As Philip is leaving on next Saturday we'll be having the perfo on Thursday evening. It will be like the "ultimate exercise". The idea is to use all we've been practising: different quality of movements, amplitude of it plus the game between us, in the streets. Think of it as our own tribe parade.
We meet tomorrow evening. 19h30 at Jakub's. 30 to 40 minutes of warm up plus this tribe cheering. Then we will practise in the streets. I have a couple a small streets in mind, where there's very few people to begin with. We will be working on the ways to dance while walking, while waiting at the traffic lights... Also the strategies we can use if we meet someone : make the move minimal, only with a specific part of the body, freeze...
And then on a wider space we will practise the game of sending movements and vibes to one another."
